Bariatric surgery, weight-loss surgery and metabolic surgery are terms that can be used interchangeably. All of these refer to the minimally invasive procedures we perform here at St. Joseph’s Health. These procedures can be laparoscopic or robot assisted — Both approaches are associated with less pain, faster recovery and fewer complications. To see which is best suited for you, our doctors and nurses work side by side with you, designing a solution that you will feel good about.
Gastric-bypass surgery is considered the “gold standard” for bariatric procedures and has been available to patients for decades. Your surgeon will make changes to your stomach and small intestine — This modification helps limit the amount of food your stomach can hold, and it alters gut hormones, which leads to an increased feeling of fullness and a decreased appetite. All of which can result in weight loss and the resolution of health conditions associated with higher weight.
As with the gastric bypass, you eat less food, but the gastric sleeve can help you still achieve a full, satisfied feeling. In this procedure, 75%–80% of your stomach is removed, which limits the amount of food this new stomach can hold at one time and causes gut hormone changes.
St. Joseph’s Health is the only hospital in the Central New York (CNY) region that offers endoscopic procedures for people with low to moderate obesity. The ORBERA intragastric balloon is effective and safe; does not require any incisions; and leaves no permanent changes to the digestive tract.
In those instances where patients have had older types of bariatric surgeries — such as stomach stapling or vertical banded gastroplasty — we can convert these outdated procedures to a more reliable operation that delivers better results. Also, we offer removal of the adjustable gastric band; conversion from adjustable gastric band to gastric bypass; and conversion from gastric sleeve to gastric bypass.
Awards and recognitions offer some assurance, but they’re not enough to provide a complete picture of care. We’ve curated the most commonly expressed fears and questions about bariatric surgery and asked Patty — a real, post-operative patient — to answer them.
